Connecting Through Surfing

So anyone that knows me, knows that i use my recreation as the easiest way to connect, teach, and enjoy other people.
Well this last weekend, i was able to take 7 others down to a batch overnight on the east coast of New Zealand called Tairua. This was the sunset on Saturday from the place.
The first night we went out to the beach adn the stars were beautiful, here was my picture of the southern cross
I was testing out the waters on teaching people how to surf because i have had so many people that are interested in learning. So i organized this trip to see how i would do.
I was also really excited about the group. Vanessa and B are twins from Vanautu and Vanessa helps out with a Nazerene youth group that the Wesleyan churches have tried to be working more closely with. It was fun to see them connect with Paul who is the youth pastor at the church where i am at cession|community. Daniel(between them) is their good friend and also goes to cession. Jason is one of the teens in the youth group and it was good to see him stretch himself. Rachel (to the left) is a youth leader with Paul, and Evy is now a good friend who is my surfing buddy and was helping teach a little. He gave a morning thought about how the waves are like our lives that was really thought provoking, which was also awesome and a big step for him.
It was cool to see the group gel together and to see new and deeper friendships being formed. God was awesome for providing a good and safe weekend. On a social front it was a total success. On a surfing front, I wish the first time surfers would've stood up, but it was a good learning step to see what i am capable of in leading. Cool.

Last Week This Week

Last Week: Summer relaxation turned into "Back to Work." I began a discipline month where I am waking up early to jog with friends and spend time in prayer and the Word. It really has increased my productivity throughout the day! I also bought a van! (pictures are attached)

I have been praying and wanting a vehicle to transport groups of people around in for missions teams, youth events, retreats, surf lessons, etc. None of the churches in this area really have a van readily available to them, so I look forward to this being used as a huge ministry tool!

This Week: Continue the Discipline Month. A team is finishing a needed cession|community church directory which will be big for involvement. There is also a meeting taking place to discuss a central database for the church which will be good for details for new people and the cell group leaders I meet with. I am also getting ready to start up a personal cell group for people around a college/university level. Another dream is coming to fruition called (OI-Open Invites). This will be an opportunity and platform to connect the young adults in and around the Auckland churches to provide a social network and place for them to bring their friends. We will provide a monthly activity, and begin to look at how we can support the people who come from their which may include mentoring or helping them develop a small group at their local church. Cool Things are Happening!

Coffee Shop Friend: I will meet up with the friend one more time this week hopefully before they head back to Sweden and I am hoping to give them a bible with a few specific passages marked since I do not think they currently own one or at least one that is used regularly.

Thanks for your prayers and support.

Ignite Followup

The camp was incredible. God really moved and i believe it is heavily because of the prayer support that went into the weekend

Below were all of the responses from the evaluation forms the teens filled out at the end of camp with basically three questions:
What did you enjoy:
Did you make any commitments:
What can we pray about for you:

What I enjoyed most about the weekend:
• Brent preaching about our saviour and the activities were awesome and GREEN WINNING!!!!!
• Group activities because it encouraged me to work together as a team, to help each other, love each other, have fun with each other and also talk in Christ with each other.

Brent’s messages were really good, and I particularly liked the foot washing time – it was quite powerful and it was so awesome to serve others that way, and the encouragement I needed. And green won!!!
• Meeting so many new people and forming great friendships with them. Also working together as a team and never giving up. The meat challenge was awesome.

I am a Camp Speaker this Weekend

It has been a good but hectic summer so far. I added two or three entries to give you a little idea of what I have been doing during the summer and Christmas on my blog: www.brentdongell.com. A great opportunity that has presented itself in the last 2 months is for me to be the camp speaker at the National Wesleyan Youth Camp(www.ignite.wesleyan.org.nz) this weekend. There will be approximately 100 people attending and approx 70% believers 30% unbelievers and this is only the camps third year running. I have been preparing hard and I am getting excited about the opportunity. This is probably an important reason God has brought me back to New Zealand at this time! I would appreciate it if you would join me in prayer for the weekend. Please pray especially for God to speak through me and the teens that will make important commitments to Christ and most likely be big leaders in the future of the Wesleyan church planting movement in New Zealand. Thanks for your prayers and I have someone videotaping the sermons so that I can share them with you later.
For those of you who like to pray during the events

Answer to Prayer

If you get a chance check out the video. It is shaky, it is not a high quality video, and nothing special, but it was a critical moment. I was at a low point here in New Zealand. During my last trip to New Zealand there was a time where everything went wrong. I was just worn out to the point of wanting to quit, when i attended church that night and received the encouragement and reaffirmation from my family in Christ. This was last Saturday, after a week of being mentally and physically exhausted after trying to get things back into place after the robbery. I was exhausted and planned to go home and crash Saturday night after a full day of activities. For some reason i was prompted to invite Heidi, Rachel, and the teens over to the place. In a moment when i couldn't take much more for the week, the family of Christ pulled through again. We turned on Christmas music, decorated a little bit, ate snacks, and just hung out, much like my family Christmases back home. It was just what i needed and had been praying for, so i picked up Heidi's camera and recorded this!

Got Robbed!

This my be my last blog for a little while.

So earlier this week my car was broken into and a camera stolen and last night(sat) our flat was broken into and approx. $6000 was taken including Graeme's TV, my laptop(macbook), both our ipods, and a few other things. Talk about a Rough Day.I had time to process through this a little this morning and remembered back 3 months into my first trip to NZ when i had experienced another huge crisis with an accident that escalated somewhat out of control. I decided to look back to see what past lessons i learned then that were meant to prepare me for now. This is what I have speculated:

1. God is in Control
With my great power and outstretched arm I made the earth and its people and the animals that are on it, and I give it to anyone I please. Jer 27:5 This is what i read first this morning when i opened my Bible.

2. I am not the MistakeIt is easy to want to blame others or to want to assume the responsibility yourself. You think of all the options of what you could've done to prevent it, but the reality is that Graeme and I were the victims here. I shouldn't develop of guilty complex over this.

3. God can and does work in miraculous Ways
In the midst of the chaos during the first trip, we thought Dan's expensive camera lens that fell out the moving van window was collateral damage. After prayer, a three hour return drive, and a 30 minute search we miraculously stumbled on his relatively unscathed camera lens. It was a small find for the amount of total damage over the month, but it was an irreplaceable bright spot and testimony to God's faithfulness overall.

4. Life is about people not Objects
I am frustrated. I feel dooped! It is a weird feeling, but I am not crushed. Neither Graeme's nor my life center around objects. We will miss our hard earned indulgences, but our purpose in God and our support through relationships allow us to be frustrated, but relatively untouched in terms of our overall outlook towards life.

5. If you haven't gotten insurance for something you were meaning to, Do It!!!
Dan and i were discussing the need for car insurance during the drive we got into our wreck.
Graeme was meaning to get content insurance for the house, but hadn't gotten around to it.
In both cases we have paid the price.

Hopefully you can learn and be encouraged by my experiences.
I appreciate your prayers and support.

Be encouraged. I don't welcome problems... but i fully acknowledge that when you are trying to serve the Lord, "accidents & problems" often mean that you are threatening enough to Satan and his kingdom to cause concern and retaliation.

How is it different being back this time?

A friend asked me this question the other day and do you know what stood out most?!? I don't have to work for extra money outside of my ministry! The financial support of everyone in the US, Australia, and New Zealand has allowed me to focus on the people and what i do best. It definitely has been different because and it is largely do to the sacrifice and service of others to allow me to pour into people who need to experience Christ in their lives. thanks for giving!
